Narragansett, Narragansett, Narr-a-gan-sett.... Narragansett Brewing company offers a very intertesting story thus far. Narragansett's first batch of beer was produced in 1890. Thats right. Thats over 119 years that the Narragansett name has been kicking around the New England. In 1891 they produced 28,000 barrels of beer. 28,000 barrels equates to 112,000 1 / 2 barrels (average keg) or 16,000 cases of bottles. That's a lot of liquid for the times. Over the next 95 years, they would have to battle through the depression, prohibition, new ownership and a slue of other problems and adversities that plagued the country. Let's fast forward to the present........
Narragansett by 1981 had survived 90 years of brewing excellence. In 1982 the owner, at the time, moved production from New England to Fort Wayne Indiana. Let me ask you, what percentage of beer is water? 90% of beer is made up of water. Locals claim that "the water from the Scituate Reservoir had been the finest in the country". So the new product produced out of Fort Wayne was, lets just say, less than par. This resulted in less barrels leaving the facility and eventually the closing of the Narragansett doors. In 2005, Mark Hellendrung and a handful of New England investors purchased the rights to Narragansett. They have revitalised the brand and are in the process of bringing the brand home to New England. They have offered new packaging on the whole line up of packages. The gold can is no longer. Now the original lager comes in a sharp white can with red lettering. Narragansett just held a rally last week at Brew City (www.Brew-City.com) in Worcester. Several people came down to show their support of the brand. Here at Austin Liquors, we fully support the local breweries. Help us help Narragansett and their quest to bring this beer back to New England.
