Liquor tax PDF Print E-mail

The state of Massachusetts is trying to put it to the little guy again with a tax on alchoholic beverages. What you may not know is

that you already pay a huge tax on alcoholoic beverages, a tax that is built into the price that you pay now. In fact over 40 cents of every dollar spent at the retail level goes to federal and state excise taxes and fees. So a tax on that becomes a tax on a tax, double taxiaztion, on people who can least afford it. Not only are they going to add the tax, but it will be the new, higher, 6.25% tax rate.

So please contact your State Senator in a polite and calm manner and ask that he/she consider the tax situation and it's long term effects, and to not add a beverage alcohol sales tax in Massachusetts. If you need to find out contact info for your Senator go to www.mass.gov/legis/city_town.htm

Check out this piece of a recent article in the Boston Globe(1/30/09)

"Already, about one in 10 customers at New Hampshire state liquor stores are Massachusetts residents, according to the New Hampshire Liquor Commission, and some New Hampshire officials could barely contain their glee at the prospect of capturing more cross-border business."Governor Patrick should just go for it," said New Hampshire state Representative Fran Wendelboe, a Republican who sits on the Finance Committee."The higher he wants to raise them, the better," Wendelboe said. "He could raise the cigarette taxes, too, while he's at it, maybe the gasoline tax, as well, so we'll give your citizens a lot of good reasons to come to our beautiful state to visit." "

This cannot possibly be a good thing for local workers, business owners, and in the long term our local ecomony. Please join the fight.

This is crazy!

I think that consumption taxes are ridiculous. They put the burden on one specific group of people who purchase a particular product. If they're going to use this tax money to benefit everyone, it should be paid into by everyone!
