Farnese Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
|
Eddie's Pick
I have been choosing my wine with an eye towards drinkability and affordability. How about a gorgeously smooth Italian red for under $10. The Farnese Montepulciano d’Abruzzo pleases both the palate and the purse strings. Opulently presented, it’s dark ruby color and pleasing cherry nose transmit to a round fruity quaff that lingers long-more like a $40-$50 Brunello. Soundly structured with good fruit through the palate and well balanced, it has a medium body with a soft texture that will pair well with pasta Bolognese. 750ml |

Perrin Vacqueyras
|
Rich’s Pick
From a 20 acre parcel of land managed by the Beaucastel team, the average age of the vines for this wine are over 50 years old. With vines that old and a warm climate you cant help but get a big concentrated wine. Half aged in oak and half aged in tank, the fruit comes through and there is enough oak to give it a lasting structure. Look for floral flavors with hints of cherry and licorice with a bright mouthwatering acidity on the finish. With 92 points from Wine & Spirits and 91 points from Wine Spectator, this is a must try wine. 750ml |

Perrin Visobres
 |
Rich’s Pick
The Vinsobres vineyard is a fairly new appellation, having gained status in 2005, that only produces red wines. The Perrin focus on small appellation character shines through on this wine. A blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah that is mostly aged in stainless steel to retain more fruit, this wine shows the elegance of the cooler parts of the Rhone Valley. Ripe and rich black currant and red cherry flavors, with hints of pencil lead, spice and even a touch of coffee combine seamlessly on a velvety textured palate. With 91 points from Wine Spectator you start to see a pattern of quality with these Perrin wines. 750ml |

Tres Picos Garnacha
 |
Rich’s Pick
Tres Picos Garnacha has reached a sort of cult -wine status. Once you have had it once, you start to anticipate it's arrival each year. This wine consistenlty scores at least 90 points each year in Wine Spectator, and has been known to make it's top 100 wines of the year list. Even better this year is the fact that when the price of wines seem to be going up, this gem has stayed the same price, making it one of the best values in the store right now. It is very limited (I only got in 60 bottles for the year), so come get it while it lasts. It is perfect for the holidays, either to drink, or as a gift to a serious wine drinker(it will age well over the next couple of years). 750ml |

Bodegas Caro Amancaya
 |
Rich’s Pick
This is the marriage of two of wines most important families, the Catena's of Argentina and the Rothschild's. The Rothschid's knowledge of Cabernet and the Catena's knowledge of the Malbec grape come together to bring us a very special bottle of wine. The name Amancaya comes from the name of a flower found in the Andes Mountains. Both sides of this partnership shine as the fruit driven Malbec side is balanced with elegance of the Cabernet. It's flavors of red and black fruit, with hints of mint and cedar, are full bodied and have a nice round mouthfeel. 11 months in oak also add a touch of vanilla and tobacco to the finish. With not alot of this spectactular wine made, grab a bottle while you can, before it's all gone. 750 ml |

G&M Machmer Gewurztraminer Spatlese
 |
Eddie's Pick
Don’t let the lengthy German label put you off, this wine should not be missed. Gewurz translates to spiced and spatlese literally means late harvest. Combining the two translates to a wine of great intensity, a touch of sweetness, spice, and gobs of fruit, with a touch of nuttiness. Floral, orange, apricot, and honeysuckle aromas leap from the glass. It is a white wine with great balance with its fruitiness offset spectactularly by a high level of refreshing acidity and a touch of sweetness. This wine will pair well with spicy Asian cuisine, or just enjoy it on its own as an aperitif. 750ml |

A Grenache dominated blend from the Gigondas appellation in the Rhone Valley, This wine shows the true dedication the Perrin family has to bringing out the best that a region has to offer. Cayalla 2004 RTW
 |
Rich’s Pick
In my continuing quest to find great value wines for my customers, I came across this gem blended with fruit from Oregon and Washinton state. Cayalla RTW (Red Table Wine) is a full bodied blend of cooler climate Merlot, Cabernet, and Syrah, making it more of a finesse wine and less of a big fruit bomb. Boldness from the Cab combine perfectly with the fruit of the Merlot and spice of the Syrah to deliver an elegantly structured wine. Flavors of black fruit, chocolate, and cedar box combine with just enough tannin and acidity make this the perfect wine for any steak dinner. This wine definitely over delivers in quality for the price. 750ml |

Marolo Grappa Camomile
 |
Rich’s Pick
This is one of the most unique drinking experiences you will have.Grappa, in the past has been a rustic distilled spirit, often just a byproduct of winemaking. In the hands of Paolo Marolo it is an elegant dinking experience. Marolo only uses high quality grapes for his Grappa and in this case it is the noble Nebbiolo grape. For this version of his Grappa, dried Camomile flowers are steeped for 11 months in the grappa, giving it an off greenish color, and adding some floral sweetness to the grappa. It's touch of sweetness and lower alcohol content make it an easy sipper. Seriously, for a unique, elegant drinking experience, you have to try this. 375ml |

Greenvale 2003 The Elms Meritage
 |
Rich’s Pick
I got to taste this wine at the vineyard and immediately came back to the store and ordered a case of it. "Produced for the Preservation Society of Newport County, rhyming with "heritage", this type of wine is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Malbec, three traditional varieties of Bordeaux. This wine is a medium bodied, dry red--wonderful aromas of berry, smoke, and subtle spice with a delicious, lingering finish. It is great by itself, as well as, with flavorful foods. 52% Cabernet Franc, 45% Merlot, 3% Malbec. Barrel aged. 160 cases produced." 750ml |

Domaine Gros Nore 2003 Bandol
 |
Rich’s Pick
This is a very special bottle of wine. Bandol is a little known region in the very south of Provence, bordering the Mediterrean Sea, where some of the best Mouvedre in the world is grown. In Bandol, by law at least 50% of the wine has to be Mouvedre, this bottling has 80%. This is the kind of wine that you want to just keep sniffing the beautiful aromas of violets and lavender. When you can bring yourself to stop smelling and taste the wine, you will find flavors of berries, cocoa, flowers, and a whole bunch of others that you will enjoy figuring out. This is definitely one of my all time favorites. #87 ON WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100 OF '06 750ml Email Me atrbeams@austinliquors.com |
